It’s no secret that Justin Timberlake has completed one of the greatest fashion 180s ever known to man. From frosted curls and excessive mewelry to Tom Ford suits and PhD-level monochromatic dressing, JT has basically become our generation’s Sinatra. But there’s one outfit that, no matter how hard he tries, he will never outrun. And apparently he’s kinda bummed about it.
Appearing on an Australian talk show to promote his latest movie Trolls, Timberlake was asked, “What have you learned about the [music] industry that you didn’t know when you were in *NSYNC?”
His answer: “If you wear denim-on-denim, it will get documented.”
If you were in a coma (or just too young to notice) during 2001, then you might not know about the infamous denim-on-denim matching outfits JT and Britney Spears wore to the AMAs that year. They were amazing. Not amazing in the way that his current style is amazing; more like amazing in the way Takeru Kobayashi eating 69 hot dogs in one sitting is amazing. It’s gross, but you can’t look away.
We’re kind of bummed that Timberlake regrets this historic style choice, though. After all, it’s a landmark moment in entertainment history—one that will likely serve as a perfect couples’ Halloween costume for decades to come. JT should be proud of contributing to popular culture in such a dynamic way.
