Ralph Lauren has crafted a specific, enviable place in the fashion world: It’s one of the few brands that stays relevant among modern innovations and trends, while maintaining its heritage as a classic, American brand.
And reaching into those archives can be one of the coolest ways the fashion itself stays modern. The brand did just that this week, by launching a limited-edition Polo Stadium capsule to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ’92 collection.
The collection itself, which includes 12 pieces, went heavy on the old-school inspiration. American athletes in the ’20s and ’30s were the jumping-off point most of the pieces, which was originally made to celebrate the 1992 Summer Games. The hooded popover, the color-blocked Polo, and lightweight jacket are all references to that initial run of products.
This isn’t all about the past, though. The contemporary updates are apparent in the fabrication of the pieces themselves; Ralph Lauren used updated pima cotton and performance technology to maintain a modern feel. Still, while while the execution is all 21st Century expertise, the aesthetic is pure throwback. Of course, thanks to the ’90s revival that shows no signs of slowing anytime soon, that aesthetic feels especially relevant right now.
There is one catch: snagging a piece from the collection will take some work. Wristbands were made available today at select RL stores—Prince Street in NYC, Michigan Ave in Chicago. and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills—which lets wearers purchase one item from the collection (sold in select stores) on September 21. Or, you could wait it out and play the secondhand game after those pieces are resold online later this week. Because there is absolutely no doubt these pieces will do anything other than become highly sought-after grails. (And rightly so.)
Good luck out there.
